GFO GRANULAR FERRIC OXIDE SMALL 2.15 LB

IceCap Standard GFO Filter Media IceCap Standard GFO (Granular Ferric Oxide) is a reliable and essential tool for every aquarist looking to manage nutrient levels and maintain a pristine aquatic environment. Phosphates and silicates are the primary fuel for nuisance algae and can severely stunt the growth of corals by interfering with calcification. This standard granular grade GFO provides a high surface area for chemical adsorption, permanently locking away unwanted nutrients before they can impact the health of your display. Because this is a standard granular media, it is specifically designed for ease of use in fluidized reactors. The irregular shape of the grains allows them to lift and tumble with very low water pressure, ensuring that water is always in contact with fresh media surfaces. Unlike "high capacity" versions, which are more dense, standard GFO is more easily fluidized, making it a favorite for hobbyists using smaller pumps or standard-flow reactors. IceCap GFO is a safe, iron-based media that provides consistent phosphate removal without the risk of heavy metal leaching, making it the perfect choice for the daily maintenance of reef and planted systems. Key Features: • Standard Granular Structure: Specifically sized for optimal fluidization without the need for high-pressure pumps. • Efficient Adsorption: Chemically binds phosphates and silicates to its surface through an ion-exchange process. • Non-Toxic: Safe for all aquatic life; does not affect pH and is completely free of aluminum. • Clear Results: Effectively reduces the frequency of glass cleaning by stripping the nutrients that diatoms and algae need to thrive. • Cost-Effective Maintenance: The ideal choice for systems requiring regular media changes to keep nutrients at undetectable levels. When to Change: • Output Testing: Use a high-sensitivity phosphate test kit to measure the water exiting the reactor. When the output level matches the tank level, the media is saturated. • Visual Cues: A sudden appearance of algae on the glass or a "dulling" of coral color often signals that it is time for a fresh batch of GFO. What’s Included: • IceCap Standard GFO Filter Media (Select Volume) Specifications: • Media Type: Standard Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO) • Application: Phosphate and Silicate Adsorption • Compatibility: Marine, Reef, and Freshwater Aquariums • Optimal Use: Media Reactors (INT/EXT) Instructions: • Rinse Thoroughly: GFO contains fine dust from shipping. Rinse the media with RO/DI water in a bucket or within the reactor until the water runs clear. • Initial Dosage: Use roughly 1 gram per gallon of total water volume. If your phosphates are already high, start with half this amount to avoid shocking sensitive corals. • Reactor Setup: Place the media in your reactor and adjust the flow so that the top layer is gently "boiling." The grains should move slightly, but not fly around the chamber. • Placement (No Reactor): If a reactor is not available, place the media in a fine-mesh bag in a high-flow area of your sump, though efficiency will be reduced compared to a reactor. • Replacement: For standard GFO, replace every 4–6 weeks or whenever phosphate levels begin to rise above 0.03 ppm. Pro Tips: • Avoid "Cementing." GFO can sometimes bind together into a solid brick if it isn't moving. Ensure your reactor has a gentle, consistent tumble. If the media stops moving, it will lose its effectiveness and become a bypass point for water. • The "Dust" Warning. If you do not rinse the media properly, a fine orange dust may enter the tank. While generally harmless to fish, this dust can irritate the gills of sensitive invertebrates. Always rinse until the water is clear before turning on the reactor's output to the display. • Monitor Alkalinity. Standard GFO can occasionally cause a slight drop in alkalinity as it binds nutrients. It is good practice to test your dKH (alkalinity) shortly after adding a fresh batch of GFO to ensure your parameters remain stable. How to Use: • Dosage: Generally, use 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons of aquarium water. • Placement: Use in a media reactor 9preferred for fluidization) or a mesh filter bag. • Caution: Monitor phosphate level carefully to avoid rapid drops, which can stress or damage corals. • Maintenance: Replace every 4 to 6 weeks, or when phosphate levels start to rise again. • User Tips: Start slowly since GFO removes phosphates quickly and effectively to avoid shocking your aquarium. Warning: Keep out of reach of children.
